Archive for the ‘botox’ CategoryThe surgery to correct leg & foot deformities in children is a lengthy, & sometimes, difficult procedure. Metal frames are attached to the leg and / or foot and over a period of time the frame is manipulated to obtain the corrected position. During this period the muscles & skin become very tight which causes pain & may pull the joint out of position. When this happens it is sometimes necessary to stop the treatment before the best position is obtained. This means that not only is the child left with an inadequate result but that further surgery is required in the future. If the tension could be removed whilst the treatment is underway this would reduce the pain, the possibility of joint damage & potentially allow a more satisfactory to be obtained without the need for further surgery. Botulinum toxin or Botox, as it is commonly called, has the potential to temporarily reduce the tension in the muscles without causing permanent damage. Botox or Botulinum toxin is also a safe and effective method to prevent excessive sweating of the armpits and hands in addition to being a wrinkle remover. Botox has been used to treat many different ailments including migraines and chronic headaches. Unfortunately for migraine sufferers, recent research shows that though it is effective for a wide range of ailments and conditions associated with excessive muscle contraction, it may not help with migrains and chronic tension headaches. After 16 recent deaths associated with Botox and another similar product called Myobloc, a consumer group is asking US authorities to issue a strong warning on the product. The deaths are attributed to a spread of the botulinum toxin inside the body from the injection site. The consumer group “Public Citizen”, reviewed reports submitted by the manufacturers to the FDA. A doctor affiliated with the group claims that the botulinum toxin could leak from the injection site into other parts such as the Esophagus and may cause partial paralysis. The group hopes to increase public awareness by asking the FDA to require the manufacturers to post stronger warning labels on their products. Soft tissue fillers are designed to “fill in” facial indentations made by fine lines and wrinkles. They can also add fullness to the lips and cheeks. The treatment smoothes the skin and gives you a more youthful appearance. Hyaluronic acid (Restylane) is a natural substance found in living organisms. It is produced in a laboratory and injected into fine lines and wrinkles. It can also be used to increase fullness in the lips. In 2004, 882,469 hyaluronic acid injections were performed in the U.S. The treatment lasts from several months to a year. Calcium hydroxylapatite (Radiesse) is a newer soft tissue filler. It’s a synthetic version of a natural substance found in bone and teeth. Last year, 69,439 procedures were done in the U.S. The treatment is more expensive than collagen or hyaluronic acid, but lasts much longer. Results with calcium hydroxylapatite last for two years or more. |
