Do you know what Hyperhidrosis is? It is a disorder that causes excessive sweating in humans and
affects almost seven million Americans each year. How much excessive sweat you ask? Huge amounts of
sweat from underarm, palms and other areas which can cause discomfort and can even be embarrasing. Not
to mention that some of this could lead to body odor. If you are one of these individuals that has been
shying away from social interactions because of the fear that you will be embarrased by your excessive
sweating, there is already a solution.
In 2004, FDA approved Botox to treat severe underarm sweating known as “primary axillary hyperhidrosis” that cannot be managed by topical agents such as prescription antiperspirants. The treatment consists of injecting about 20-25 drops of Botox into the skin where the sweating problem occurs. Within 48 hours of the treatment, patients have shown remarkable results of up to 90% reduction in excessive sweating. Within a week the problem is resolved in most patients and other effects such as bad odor due to excessive sweat take care of itself. One thing to note is that this treatment is temporary in nature and has to be repeated in 6-12 months to maintain the results.
Though this treatment is highly suited for the underarm area, when it comes to treating palm sweating with Botox it is a bit more complicated. There is pain associated in injecting Botox into the Palm that can cause enough discomfort to make it not a suitable treatment option at this time.
Before considering this treatment, you should be aware of the side effects/dangers of Botox.
